As I looked into the mirror this morning, a profound curiosity awoke within me. I somehow ignited a sense of longing to connect with my ancestors. The weight of not knowing who they were fills me with sadness. What did they look like, what legacies did they craft, and how did they navigate the trials of their era? Did they encounter true love or find their life’s purpose? What dreams and aspirations fueled their journey? In this moment, I’m acutely aware that I exist because of them, and yet, I’m left wondering whether they recognize the path I’ve forged. Would they look upon me with pride,? Or would they, in sorrow, know that I’ve forgotten them… their stories fading from generation to generation?

My Mother’s Paternal Ancestors
Discovered through Ancestry.com

My family settled in Virgina & North Carolina from Europe in the mid-1700s, then moved into Tennessee & Kentucky in the early 1800s, ending up in Missouri in the late 1800s.
Marietta, my 3rd great-grandmother, married William Swearngin at just 13 years old and she lived to be 90.
The name was changed from Van Swearingen to Swearngin in the early 1800s.
My Father’s Maternal Ancestry
Discovered through Ancestry.com
On my grandmother’s father’s side, mythology and legend are where my family history begins. For centuries and still today, my family claims to be from the Clanna Rudraige which, according to Irish mythology and medieval texts, is an ancient tribe that ruled the ancient province of Ulaid in Ireland and were descendants of Milesius of Spain, Father of the Irish Race and 33 generations from Adam.

Despite the myths, the Barrys (originally O’Barry and de Barry), came to power and owned much of the land in Wales and Ireland due to this belief of many, having the largest barony in Cork Island and building Barryscourt Castle. The Barryscourt Casle remained the home of Barrys until 1645 when it was taken over and later destroyed. In 1987, the Barryscourt Trust was set up for the purpose of conserving and repairing the castle. It is now a heritage tourist site.
